Puppy Training

The first few days of your puppy’s life in its new home are very important. It is important for the development of the dog that you establish rules and start puppy training straight away. Those first few days and weeks, everyone is going to want to pet and play with the puppy and rules are easily broken. Children will want to have the puppy sleep in their bed and in that early excitement will let the puppy jump all over them. This will immediately lead to bad habits.

It is important to remember that your new puppy has recently been separated from her mother and littermates. Your new puppy is vulnerable. To overcome her vulnerability, she needs routine and security. Dedicate a small area to be her home for these tender coming months. Cover that area with paper and all her toys. This will be her special place, where she will learn that she does not have rule over the entire house.

Your new puppy is impressionable, so start explaining the puppy training straight away. You will be tempted to let her get away with anything because she is such an adorable puppy. But if you show her special treatment from the beginning, this will only lead to bad habits forming later and confusion at your rule changes.

An important part of puppy training is to socialize with other dogs and people. Dogs that do not interact with other dogs or people can grow up to be overtly aggressive or fearful. You can enroll your puppy in socialization classes that let your dog interact in a controlled and relaxed environment.
