It is important to use the reward-based technique when training your dog. This technique requires specific supplies. The two reward-based dog training supplies are treats and a clicker. This is how they work.

The clicker is a small mechanical device that makes a clicking sound. Make the clicker sound and immediately after feed the dog a treat. This is done until the dog associates the sound of the click with a treat. This creates what is known as a “secondary reinforcer”. If you want to teach your dog to sit, each time he sits, you click to mark the behavior and then reward a treat. Once the behavior is constant with the use of a clicker, then a verbal cue is used as well. As the animal responds to the verbal cue, the clicker is no longer needed.
